Contemplation in the sun

Contemplation in the sun

At home, in The Netherlands, the days are cold, dark and short. Here in Asia, the days begin early and end early, and are warm and light, even when it rains. These dark months in our part of the world are used to turn to the inside, to look back upon the year, feel grateful for all that's passed and to be introspective. We have many light festivals and celebrations, to get through these dark times, and to ignite the lights within ourselves, to shine upon others and warm them too. I wondered if we'd miss these rituals, now that we're skipping them. Then I realized that this whole journey contains elements of the same process. Travelling makes you turn inwards all the time, makes you reconsider your morals, makes us ever so thankful for everything that we have, at home and certainly now, experiencing a different world with our family. So Christmas trees and sumptuous meals may be far away, but the realization of a year ending and another one waiting for us, is alive and kickin' in our consciousness!
